ABOUT ME
My name is Asia (Arantza) Mehasi. Asia not as in the continent “ˈeɪʒə”, but as in “ɑ:sɪæ”, Pharaoh’s wife, the adoptive mother of Moses. In terms of Arantza (as I have 3 names!), it’s a Basque name meaning “thornbush”, which is the name used for a shrine of Mary (mother of Jesus/ʿīsá) in Oñate, the town where I was born and brought up.
You don’t really appreciate the things you have until you’ve lost them, and I really miss Oñate now, the lifestyle, the weather, the people. I left Spain when I was 18, and have lived in 3 different countries since, the UK, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and travelled to many more.
My motto is: happiness is to travel.
I could not live without travelling. Staying in one place would drive me crazy. Seeing new places, having new experiences and meeting new people is what makes me happy. Travel is indeed the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. It is important for mental growth and happiness, and helps build connections with different people by learning about their culture and beliefs.
WHAT I DO
I’m an Information Systems Engineer, but I have worked in many different fields. I enjoy learning new things and taking on new challenges. A lot of my work has been at universities, but also in third sector organisations. I enjoy creating marketing material, leaflets, magazines, booklets, websites. I also do proofreading for thesis and articles, and have provided translation services (Spanish to English) to government officials too.
What I love the most is organising trips. While living in the Middle East I used to organise weekend getaways to Bahrain, UAE and Qatar, events and activities i.e. paragliding, sandboarding, quad biking, diving in the Red Sea and camping in the desert.
